Sekyere East District, Ashanti Region - The Agricultural Director of the Sekyere East District Assembly, Mr. Raphael Dodzi Sorkpor, joined the people of the district to celebrate the 39th National Farmers' Day.
The event, which was held on Friday, December 1, 2023, at the district capital, Effiduase, saw the recognition and reward of hardworking farmers who have contributed to the growth and development of the agricultural sector in the country.
Mr. Raphael Dodzi Sorkpor commended the farmers for their hard work and dedication to the development of the agricultural sector, which remains the backbone of the Ghanaian economy.
He noted that the theme for this year's celebration, "Planting for Food and Jobs: Consolidating Food Systems in Ghana," is a call to action for all stakeholders to work towards the achievement of food security and sustainable development in the country.
He further stated that the district assembly would continue to support farmers in the district through the provision of farm inputs and other resources needed to enhance their productivity.
The award winners were presented with various prizes including tractors, ploughs, cutlasses, and other farming tools.
The ceremony was attended by other officials of the district assembly, traditional leaders, and members of the public who came out in their numbers to support the farmers.
In his closing remarks, Mr. Raphael Dodzi Sorkpor urged the farmers to continue to work hard towards the development of the agricultural sector, and assured them of the government's commitment to creating an enabling environment for them to thrive

In a bid to promote the cultivation of ginger in the Sekyere East District, the Director of Agriculture at the Sekyere East District Assembly, Mr. Raphael Dodzi Sorkpor, and his team have acquired planting materials from Nkawie and have begun cultivating the crop.
Although the ginger is still at the stage of demonstration and promotion, the team recently conducted a harvest of the crop cultivated in Nkawie. The aim of the demonstration and promotion is to encourage farmers in the district to cultivate ginger as an alternative crop to increase their income.
Speaking to reporters after the harvest, Mr. Sorkpor explained that ginger is a profitable crop that has a high demand in the local and international markets. He added that the ginger cultivated in the district has the potential to compete with imported ginger, thereby reducing the country's dependence on foreign imports.
Sorkpor also noted that the cultivation of ginger is in line with the government's efforts to promote the planting for food and jobs initiative. He called on farmers in the district to take advantage of the opportunity and cultivate ginger in addition to their other crops.
The assembly has also been promoting the use of liquid organic insecticides and fertilizers to help farmers cultivate without necessarily buying high-cost inorganic ones. This move is aimed at gradually channeling production towards organic produce for safe consumption and reducing the dependence on foreign input sources.
The harvest of the ginger cultivated in Nkawie is just one of the many initiatives being undertaken by the Sekyere East District Assembly to promote agriculture in the district. The Pinasol Foundation, a community-based Child- centered Non- Governmental Organization in the Sekyere East District, has donated food items to in-patients of some hospitals in the District.
The items included cooked food packages, soft drinks, pastries and confectioneries among others, were donated to the in-patients within three health institutions at Effiduase and Asokore.
The health facilities are the Effiduase Government Hospital, Divine Hospital and the Ahmaddiyya Government Hospital.
Dr. Kwame Sefah, the Principal Scientist of Roche Molecular Systems in the USA, a Philanthropist and donor to the Foundation, who funded the donation, in a brief speech at the presentation ceremony held at the premises of the Effiduase Government Hospital, said it was most pertinent to give utmost care to the poor and needy in society.
Apostle Solomon Asiamah Okyere, the Executive Director, said the gesture was to focus community attention to the care of the sick and those admitted at the health facilities receiving treatment for different ailments, especially the poor and needy who feel rejected during their moments of hospitalization.
He said the exercise which begun last year, would be sustained as an annual programme aimed at complementing the already established programmes for mutual care and support for humanity.
Apostle Okyere said it was necessary for churches and corporate bodies to employ such initiatives as part of their corporate social responsibilities.
He said though there was the existence of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to cater for patients at the various health centers, a little support in terms of cash or kind, from religious and various corporate bodies, was necessary for the psychological healing and wellbeing of the sick, especially those who were hospitalised.
He called on churches to establish foundations to care for the poor, needy and the sick in the society, to enhance the welfare of all persons locally and globally.

The Office of the Member of Parliament for Effiduase/Asokore Constituency and the Sekyere East District Assembly in their efforts to promote education have distributed school uniforms to basic school pupils in the Sekyere East District. A total number of 1,200 uniforms were distributed to both male and female pupils in the following schools; Attakrom D/A, Okaikrom D/A, Odurokrom D/A, Seniagya D/A, Awaham Brofoyedru D/A, Asukawkaw D/A, Ahwerewa D/A, Feyiase D/A, Daakoho D/A, Motokrodua D/A, Ntunkumso D/A, Effiduase Demonstration and Asokore Trinity D/A. A cheque was also presented to the T. I. Ahmadiyya Girls SHS, Asokore, for the procurement of musical instruments for the school’s cadet.
Mr. William Brako Agyapong, Education Director for Sekyere East District in his remarks averred that he recognizes the efforts of Hon. Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye, MP-Effiduase Asokore Constituency, Hon. Osei Adiyiah, District Chief Executive-Sekyere East District and government in addressing the numerous challenges faced by schools in the District. He indicated that he was excited about the presentation as it addressed a dire bottleneck that prevented numerous pupils from attending school.
Hon. Osei Adiyiah, DCE, applauded the District Education Service for the excellent job done so far and implored that they sustain the momentum and not waver in their service to the nation. He opined that his office and that of the Member of Parliament for Effiduase Asokore Constituency are committed to improving the delivery of education in the district and will not relent in their efforts to make their vision materialize. He expressed utmost gratitude to the Akufo Addo/Bawumia government for the massive improvements in the education sector.

The Sekyere East District Assembly has launched a new market, named Fridays Market, in a bid to generate Internally Generated Funds (IGF) for the development of the district. The market was launched on Friday 7th April 2023 at a ceremony attended by the chiefs and people of the district.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, the District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr. Osei Adiyiah, highlighted the importance of the market to the development of the district. He noted that the Fridays Market will serve as a source of revenue for the assembly, which will be channeled towards the provision of social amenities and infrastructure in the district.
The DCE further stated that the market will also provide employment opportunities for the people in the district, especially the youth. He urged the traders to take advantage of the market and conduct their businesses in an orderly and responsible manner.
The Fridays Market, which is located in the heart of the district capital, is expected to attract traders from all over the district. The market boasts of a spacious and modern layout, with facilities such as clean washrooms, water points, and parking spaces for traders and customers.

In a bid to give the Sekyere East District Assembly a more modern look, the building has undergone a thorough renovation and painting exercise.
The project, which was initiated by the Assembly, has been completed, and the new look of the building has been unveiled.
The Sekyere East District Assembly building, which was built many years ago, had begun to look dilapidated and outdated, prompting the renovation project. The project involved the painting of the building's interior and exterior, as well as the replacement of old fittings with new ones. The renovation and painting exercise were carried out by a team of experienced architects and painters who were tasked by the District Engineer with giving the building a more modern look.
According to the District Chief Executive, Hon. The Sekyere East District Budget Unit has held a sensitization workshop to educate Assembly members and stakeholders on the Program Based Budget and Fee Fixing Resolution for the 2023 fiscal year. In an effort to boost agriculture in the Sekyere East District, the Director of Agriculture, Raphael Sorkpor, and his team have been busy with the building and training of farmers on a pineapple project in various communities.
According to Sorkpor, the communities where the pineapple is currently planted include Brofoyedru, Ogua, Amagoase, Okaikrom, Attakrom, and Effiduase. He added that more planting will be done before the end of May.

In a bid to improve maize production in the Sekyere East District of the Ashanti Region, the District Assembly's agriculture department organized a maize demonstration at Naama. The demonstration was attended by farmers and other stakeholders in the agriculture sector.
